man the precipitious rise and fall of stormpilot back in early 2016 is still so interesting to me. I mean - what HAPPENED there? That ship was SO huge and then it disappeared practically overnight. It was bizarre.
I used to think it was all the purity wank. Now, I think it’s just the natural life cycle of a movie fandom.
We tend to measure all ships against babby’s first megafandom or against a tiny number of juggernaut pairings. We assume those are “normal”, when in fact, they’re freaky outliers. Kylux is an outlier. The rest of these ships, including stormpilot and reylo, are behaving exactly like any other movie ship. It’s just more dramatic with stormpilot because it was so very, very popular. (Well, and because we care more since Finn is a groundbreaking character.)
oh, I see what you mean. that does make sense! now I wonder if anyone would have really noticed it declining if kylux hadn’t been there breaking all the rules and showing everyone up.
(of course the question is then what happened with *kylux*, but I don’t know if I want to open that particular can of worms)
Yeah, I think it was mostly Kylux “stealing” popularity that made people notice. The discourse changed very quickly from blaming stormpilot for a lack of finnrey to blaming kylux for a lack of stormpilot. I do think it would be great to analyze Kylux. I mean, yes, space fascists, how very dare! etc., but while pairings of MOC don’t tend to blow up like this, other white guy pairings don’t tend to either. There’s definitely something weird about this one, which makes it interesting to look at.
