Nyota
Did you know that Uhura’s first name, Nyota – never mentioned in TOS – was also a fanwriter contribution? Zines as early as the 70′s were calling her “Penda Uhura,” then in the early 80′s “Nyota Uhura” began circulating, and got picked up by the licensed published novels. We first heard her name in a cannon source when Abrams used for “Nyota” for the reboot.
And I think that’s pretty cool.
