Personal essays about fandom history?
There’s been a lot of interest in posting about fannish history lately, and there were several positive responses to my casual proposal that we provide a more permanent and searchable home for these essays, so I have a suggestion.
Is anyone up for posting personal essays/reminiscences about fandom to AO3? Here’s what I was thinking:
- Mid-2000s and earlier as the period? That’s the period that seems to be less well-documented. (Otoh, I do think comparative essays are interesting as well.)
- Using the collection feature on AO3 to bring these together. This could include people submitting their works and works that already exist being invited.
- Meta about fandom itself is perfectly welcome on AO3. The fandom tag, if you’re not talking about a specific fandom’s history, is usually “Fandom - Fandom”. Many people add “Meta Essay” as an additional tag/freeform.
- This is about personal recollections. If you have receipts, data, items, any sort of detailed documentation, please by all means get it up on Fanlore. That’s a better home for anything verifiable and non-personal.
Thoughts? Additions? Subtractions? If there’s enough interest, I’ll try to rustle up some folks to mod, but I want to get a sense of what people want first.
