A Fandom Horror Story

Dear Diary, today I learned that a writer was so furious with a fan for writing fanfic based on her character (which was based on a real life historical figure) that she demanded that the fans write apology letters which her lawyer had to approve. The fans then had to pay to have the letters published in multiple magazines after which they were required to deliver all copies of the stories to her to be destroyed.

In a 1992 letter to the Science Fiction Writers of America she wrote:

“Since I have an absolute horror of burning books, I have decided to find some way other than that to destroy them. I have commissioned a larger-than-life-sized papier-mâché bust of the Count to be made with those copies …It suits my sense of irony, if nothing else, and my lawyer informs me that it fulfills the necessity of rendering the story unreadable.“
