Again, hundreds of packed  bodies pushed against against a human barricade of “Klingons” in blue and black leotards and a fierce
makeup of Oriental tan. “Stand back!” they ordered,  ray guns aimed at the chandeliers.  A closer look revealed security police revolvers. Scurrying to and out of the closed ballroom doors were convention volunteers called “Gophers,” wearing space jogging suits and carrying walkie-talkies.

The first Star Trek convention was held in 1969 in a Newark, New Jersey library. Around 300 people attended attended and there were no guests. The first large scale Star Trek convention was put on by a group of New York fans called “The Committee”. It was held on January 21-23, 1972 and 3000 fans attended.  By 1976, there were 3 different Star Trek events held in New York: NY Star Trek 1976 (this event), Al Schuster’s International Star Trek Convention,  and the Committee Cons.
