oh dang i didn’t know that more than like 2 people actually liked that!
so a few of my favorite tidbits that might not have been on here before:
[image description: a business card sized piece of paper that says on it
Fake Fans Association
CHICON III
Room No. ………]
this is from back when people would pass around quote cards at cons and people would sign them and they would get handed around and i seriously would put this on everything i own if it were a sticker
-someone published a bit of writing called The Eye of Argon in a fanzine in like 1970 and it was so bad that it’s still getting passed around today and it gets read at cons (here’s a link: http://ansible.uk/misc/eyeargon.html). usually what people do is they try to read as far as they can without laughing or messing up (typos must be read as written) because you have to respect the text and then it gets passed to the next person. also, sometimes people act out what’s going on as it’s being read.
-for a while there was a catchphrase that was Fandom Is A Way Of Life (or FIAWOL) that i’ve seen a little bit recently but it’s pretty rare. the response to this was Fandom Is Just A G(h)oddamned Hobby (FIJAGH).
-also, faanfiction (not the same as fanfiction) was a thing where people would write fiction about real or fictional fans and put it in ‘zines and things like that. i think fandom’s gotten too big for that to have continued much (at least, outside of the real direct con-going sf&f fandom)
