luminous sw non-adult fic: Revisions
this is a super interesting document to me, because it highlights some of the differences between the way fanfic is written and approached now, as opposed to how it was back in the pre-internet days
key differences:
-irene writes her fic in a notebook. most people these days use a computer of some description (laptop, desktop, phone, tablet…)
-she discusses it with her family, whereas i am sure most of you and myself keep our fic writing mostly on the dl
-rather than be able to publish it in installments, and get feedback on each installment, she has to publish it all at once
-its published in a zine, so a physical format that is distributed at a convention- this is where she will get most of her feedback. this is as opposed to nowadays, where we publish on LJ, AO3, ff.net or here on tumblr. we get ongoing comments over the course of years
-she worries that it will not be good enough to be published. we dont have that concern these days, as getting our material out there is as easy as pressing “post”
-the length of the undertaking: her fic is written over the course of several months. the longest i personally have spent on one fic is two months.
key similarities:
-irenes creative process seems pretty similar to mine, and others i am sure
-length of the fic: this specific author has fics ranging from 3k words to longer ones (unsure of the exact length)
-we still use editors in fandom
-we still get annoyed at our editors
-the joy of seeing your work recognised
-love/hate relationship with your writing :’)
so basically, this is a very interesting historical document. i think all younger fans of an old fandom could benefit from looking into the history of said fandom. theres a lot of fascinating stories and people out there!
